Spicy Cheese Fondue

This fondue recipe was pulled from www.gourmetsleuth.com. It allows for significant variation in spiciness. It's a spicy combination of Monterey Jack cheese, sharp cheddar, beer, and garlic. I've reduced the portions by a factor of 1 so that these amounts will serve 4 easily.

Hardware

  • Fondue pot

    Food

  • 1/2 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (to taste)
  • 1/2 pound Monterey Jack cheese
  • 1/4 pound sharp cheddar cheese (preferably with jalapenos)
  • 6-8 ounces beer (depending on desired consistency)
  • 1 clove garlic (minced)
  • What to say during a meeting

When confronted with the inevitable status request, here's how you handle it. As for me, I'm waiting until the next time I'm on a dysfunctional cross functional inter-disciplinary multi-focused team to pull this rabbit out.

Leader: What's the status of your project?
Cubicle Warrior: I've been focusing my bandwidth on organic growth. I'm getting lots of push-back, so I'm taking the discussions offline. But sometimes I table an issue or handle it in a sidebar. Now I have my ducks in a row, the deal-breakers are on the back burner, and I'm managing expectations.

CPAC 2007 - A Video From "The Nation"

I thought this video put together by a liberal journalist from The Nation covering the events of CPAC 2007 was amusing to say the least. For anyone that hasn't yet swallowed the coolaid of the Republican Party, view the video below. Whether you agree or not, it's fun to watch.

The same goes for when Protest Warrior does these things at Liberal demonstrations. What's funnier than a dread lock wearing cliche yammering into a camera about how great the world would be if we followed the Soviet model? Let's not forget the requisite cloud of marijuana smoke these guys always seem to be engulfed in. It scares me that someone like that can vote, never mind that his vote cancels out mine.

Working From Home? Setup a good work area first.

Working from home can be great. All you need is:

  • company laptop
  • VPN connection
  • worthless winter car (Mustang)
  • 2 really bad snowdays

Just remember to do one thing first, make sure you have a semi-professional work area. Just SITTING in this mess made me feel like I was slacking off. On the other hand, since my new server and my desktop PC were in pieces, there was nothing I could do about it. With the HDTV sitting inches in front of my face, Spanish daytime soap operas beckoned. Fortunately for me, Fernando ain't my thing. I'll leave that to the welfare queens. Databases don't design themselves you know...

  • How NOT To Use Your Camera's Flash

I think my dog's left eye pretty much sums it up:

    Tortilla Dip Recipe

This dip is absolutely delicious. It's not as thick as some cheese-based dips so it won't break the tortilla chips. On the other hand, you can't use it as a spread. It's a creamy, dairy based dip. The cumin adds that smoky flavor while the salsa and chili powder adds the smooth spiciness.

  • 8 oz. pkg. Cream Cheese
  • ½ Cup Sour Cream
  • ½ Cup Salsa
  • 1 ½ tsp Chili Powder
  • 1 tsp Ground Cumin
  • 1/8 tsp Ground Red Pepper (I use paprika and just sprinkle in)

Mix all the ingredients in a small bowl. Garnish with chopped scallions if desired and serve with nacho chips.

  • Man Law

We always hear "the rules" from the female side. Now, the guys' side of the story.

Please note, these are all numbered "1" on purpose.

    1. Men are NOT mind readers.

    1. Learn to work the toilet seat.
You're a big girl. If it's up, put it down.
We need it up, you need it down.
You don't hear us complaining about you leaving it down.

    1. Sunday sports. It's like the full moon
or the changing of the tides.
    Let it be.

    1. Shopping is NOT a sport.
And no, we are never going to think of it that way.

    1. Crying is blackmail.

    1. Ask for what you want.
Let us be clear on this one:

    Projects

    ZoneMinder Digital Video Security Server

    Status: Ongoing
    Started: Early 2008
Using ZoneMinder on a Linux server to monitor, record, and playback video from multiple security cameras. Currently testing various hardware configurations to determine where the greatest bottlenecks lie.

    Events

When you delete an event through the web interface, it might not delete the files from the HDD right away. Allow it some time and it'll remove them.

    Nighttime Recording

The Front camera's nighttime recording picks up too much. When in MoRecord mode, it's almost always recording because of the cars passing by the front window. The USB Intel webcam is also triggering events at night. This despite the all black screens it records.

Loops as performance killers and DoEvents()

Loops are a performance killer. They shouldn't be used when they don't have to. On the plus side, the run time of a standard loop is O(n) which is linear. Nevertheless, know your language and the functions available. It's a mistake to loop through a data structure when it has a built in function call to do what you need more efficiently. I learned this the hard way as you'll see.

I was clearing a list box control in an Access form by removing each item from the list:

    'clear the listbox
    For i = lstAcct.ListCount - 1 To 0 Step -1
    lstAcct.RemoveItem i
    Next i

    My coworker's been kidnapped!

I arrived at work one morning to notice a certain emptiness. Something wasn't quite right in the land of cubicle JE-4452. A spot on my cubicle wall lay barren. Candroid was gone!

    Candroid was a popular employee.

In his place were these 2 ransom notes I've been left with. Now, I'm a firm believer in not appeasing terrorists, but this is getting out of hand. Cookies? Maybe.

And now he's been traveling the country with his captors. It appears that even if I were to yield to their demands there's no guarantee he'd make it back safely.

He's even made it to D.C.

Through the magic of Google Images I was able to identify the background of this first shot. It is in fact the headquarters of CNN which is in Atlanta, Georgia.

UPDATE 12/12/2006: He was recently spotted at the Seattle Space Needle

UPDATE 1/3/2006: Now he's been all over the zoo and lord knows where else
